Looks like we can take a year off from Netflix

I have received, as a gift, a massive DVD set of classic art house films distributed by Janus. It's a heavy, hardcover box, with 50 DVDs and an accompanying book with the inevitable Martin Scorsese introduction. We're going to see one a week this year: It will be like going to the Brattle, which we used to pre-kids. I've seen only about one-third of these films, mostly during my long-ago college years, and 10 or so of 'em I haven't even heard of. So, gentle readers, we do have a comments section. Check out the list. Where do you think we should start?

watch "the rules of the game" once a week for 50 weeks, send me the rest. amazing, not a single chase scene--though there's a hunting scene you'll not soon forget--and it's somehow still the best movie ever made. better than "gremlins," better than "e.t.," if you can imagine.

I was also going to say Rules of the Game which I saw for the first time on TCM a couple of months ago. You could always go the chronological route--sure it may be a no-brainer but you can see how storytelling and cinematic techniques developed over 40 years of non-Hollywood moviemaking.

I would send it back-how can you watch Ivan the Terrible part 2 without having seen part 1? Why, that would be like watching Police Academy 2 without seeing the 1st installment-you will be completely lost....
