Crunch-tastic
Just received an exciting version of "Charlie Don't Surf" from a Chicago band you should have heard of called The Crunchies. Unlike the smooth, leisurely groove of the Clash original, their souped-up version reminds me of nothing so much as The Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back." I must admit I am not only delighted that so many people whose work I adore have contributed to The Sandinista Project, but I am also impressed by how true the contributors are staying to the spirit of the original while changing the sound rather dramatically. I am very fortunate to be involved in this project.
And now I'm going to do something I should have already: Ask The Crunchies whether we can post "Charlie Don't Surf" here as an advance track.

Hi Jimmy - great album, and I was wondering how this project was put together and if you could point me in the direction of some info on this. My reason for asking, apart from musical interest alone, stems also from my blogging activities.
I write an anthropology blog, and we have regular Blog Carnivals, to which material is submitted from a number of sources, and I'm interested in both writing up a review of the album, as well as a comparison into how a project like SP, as opposed to a blog carnival, was constructed - ie were certain bands asked to cover a particular track, or did bands write in asking to do specific tracks, how long the whole venture took, and what obstacles had to be overcome along the way.
Thanks
Thanks, Tim. The story of how the album was put together is in the liner notes of the CD.
Thanks Jimmy - sorry I hadn't got round to reading the notes when I wrote earlier - I don't normally write music reviews, but because this is something I've been listening to over the past 25 years or so, it's great to hear a reinterpretation in so many diverse ways, so I'd like to give it some sort of write-up in the near future - good one - cheers, Tim
